What is up babes? I swear I get asked the question all the time, how do you not wash your hair. The short and long answer are you have to train your hair. There is NO reason you need to wash your hair every single night. It’s honestly not even good for your hair if you wash it everyday. I know, many of you are thinking to yourself right now I literally have to wash my hair everyday or it will be disgusting. But, I promise with a little work you will LOVE your hair even when you don’t wash it.
I don’t want the oily life, it chose me
Okay, so first off you have to get uncomfortable with the uncomfortable. To train your hair you have to let your hair be gross from time to time. Let me explain, when you wash your hair everyday you are stripping natural oils from your scalp. The more you wash your hair the more your scalp thinks it needs to produce more oil. Hence, why your hair is ALWAYS oily if you wash it every single day. So when you don’t wash your hair/ you let your natural oil sit on your head, your scalp doesn’t produce extra oil because you already have some.
Now you’re thinking, okay Cassidy, cool I understand why my hair is oily now, but how do I fix it? Well you have to start out small. Go from washing it every 24 hours to every 36 hours. What do you mean, you ask? So wash your hair at night, go the whole next day and then don’t wash it again until the next morning (ex. wash Sunday night, wear your hair all day Monday, wash it again Tuesday morning). You with me? The longer your oil sits on your hair the less your scalp will produce it. So whenever you can try and go that extra night or extra day (aka the weekends) before washing it. After you stretch it to 36 hours then work for 48 hours. Even if you have to wear your hair in a ponytail on the second day, DO IT. Anything to get to the 48 hour mark.
Meeting your best friend
Once, you get down washing your hair every 36-48 hours now we start to stretch it out even more. This is when dry shampoo seriously becomes your best friend. You will learn to love dry shampoo, yes, even the extra build up in your hair – you will learn to love it. What personally bothers me the most with oily hair is when I wake up and literally see the oil in my hair. I do everything in my power to avoid that. Which means dry shampooing my hair at night!
I know you probably haven’t heard that one before. But, dry shampooing your hair at night is the game changer. You can’t just use any dry shampoo at night, you have to powder dry shampoo! My favorite one ever is from Lush. I have used it for over three years now and I can’t live without it. I have gone through MANY full size and travel sized bottles. What I do with this bad boy is I lift up layers of my hair and sprinkle it in. I NEVER put it on the top of my hair – I simply just pick up the the top layer sprinkle some dry shampoo in and work my way down a couple more layers. Once you have sprinkled it all over, then run your hands through your hair and work it all in. Then you are good to go to bed!
Bring it home
So now that you put powder dry shampoo in your hair at night you should wake up without a trace of oil in the morning! I do take it a step further and use an aerosol dry shampoo in the morning to perk everything up + fight off oil for the rest of the day. I layer the aerosol spray just like the powder! Never spray it on top, only under the layers. Once finished, shake your hands through your hair! Then you are ready to style and go!
Just as a disclaimer this has been a long process in the making. I was the one that washed my hair EVERYDAY, then slowly made it to 36/48 hours, then every three days then before I knew it I was at five days… now I am washing my hair every SEVEN to EIGHT days. But, it didn’t happen over night! It was months of working on my hair but it was seriously all worth it! I think my hair is healthier then ever now because of it. It also makes styling my hair so much easier because I don’t have to use a heat tool every single morning.
How i style my hair
I use to hate my hair straight. LIKE HATE IT. My hair is very thin and when I wore it straight I thought it looked stringy and dull. Not washing my hair I believe has made it look more full and voluminous. I don’t mind wearing my hair straight at all. It honestly is so easy to just blow dry my hair and go!
I do not use a straightener when I wear my hair straight. I blow dry it out of the shower and get on with the day LOL! I have fallen in love with THIS tool. It is my favorite thing ever. My cycling studio even has Dyson hair dryers and I don’t use them anymore I bring this tool with me. To be clear I have had this tool for two months hahah but these two months have been the best ever. I use to get out of the shower blow dry my hair with a hair dryer and round brush then put in rollers hahahah. This eliminates everything.
When I curl my hair I switch between a 1′ inch and 1.25′ inch wand. I do not use a clam curling iron, just a wand! I section my hair off in three sections and curl everything away from my face. Once I finish I shake it out with my fingers and call it a day. It really is that easy LOL.
