Okay friends, it is no surprise I work a full time job. And if it is a surprise idk where you have been LOL. I have worked since I was 16 years old, I first started in retail before moving to nannying and then hospitality. I had had a ton of different jobs over the years and I am still working hard to move up in my company. Click here to read how I found my career.
Staring my hospitality job fresh out of college I knew I was going to have to work my way up. Within 10 months of starting I had been promoted and now I am 9 months into my current role! I want to keep moving up and to do that you can’t just sit around my friends. You have to prove that you want it and you have to work for it. No, I am not on my game everyday. I have my bad days just like everyone else, but I try to limit them or at least limit who can tell that I am having a bad day.
Today I just wanted to share a couple tips on how to up your work game, whether you’re trying to move up or not – these simple tips can help you live a better work life.
Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff
This was my hardest one to learn and still the thing I struggle with the most. Not sweating the small stuff isn’t always the easiest. It is the little things that just make your skin craw and can make you heated. BUT when you turn your mindset around you can turn your day around. Coming into work to an annoying or upsetting email?? Let it bother you and you are passive aggressive all day OR come in and find a way to laugh to make fun of it and you will keep your day rolling along.
Ask For Feedback
This is another one that is hard for me because I hate hearing the truth sometimes… Who would ever want to sit there and hear someone say things they aren’t doing great at? Yeah, I’d rather live in a fantasy world where I’m the best all the time LOL but that isn’t reality. There are plenty ways you can ask for feedback/ work on yourself. First, by picking up daily clues from your boss and co-workers if they ask for a report a different way/ they ask you to change something. Make those changes and improve upon them! Maybe you do something everyday well today take it to your boss and ask for feedback or how you can improve upon it.
Next, by have more formal conversations with your managers/ bosses. Ask them every month or every other month for a formal sit-down meeting where you go over everything pertaining to your job. In that meeting ask for feedback, ask what you could do to improve yourself and write down all the information. You need to take these conversations seriously so you can learn and grow from them and hopefully move up soon!
Make A To Do List
Hahaha Cassidy, this is one of your tips?? But, yes girl it is! To do lists are so completely under rated. I use to make one here or there but never really lived by them. Now they are my life, I even have a designated to do notepad sitting next to my keyboard at all times. I not only write down my things I need to do that day, but also during the week. I treat it as a rolling to do list so I never forget items. Remember when your boss told you to do something and then you forgot?? Yeah that happens all the time so write it down next time. It doesn’t matter if you have to do it that day or the next day just make sure you don’t forget. The worst thing ever is when your boss or co-worker has to ask again for something again that you could have gotten done if you just would have remembered.
Break Down Your Tasks
Not gonna lie, I get overwhelmed at work form time to time. It used to just frustrate me, but I finally found how to feel less overwhelmed. That’s by breaking down my larger tasks into bite-sized pieces. Remember that daunting item just hanging over your head?? Then it gives you anxiety so you get frustrated and you don’t want to do it??? Yeah exactly girl I know that feeling too. All you need to do next time is write down all the simple tasks that make up the bigger one. Need to pull a report, then send an email, then make an excel, then email that out, then wait for feedback, then submit your item??? Yeah don’t label that as “Monday Report” and let every Monday frighten you. Label that as six different items and GET IT DONE!
Take A {Lunch} Break
Work can be hard, tiring and overwhelming, I know. That’s why instead of working through lunch you should give yourself a break and just get in a new space for a minute. Also, don’t feel like you always have to go to lunch with someone. Take a moment and go to lunch with yourself sometimes! It is really so nice to relax and take a walk and just be with yourself. I know you have a ton of work to do and working through lunch seems so easy, but next time think of yourself first! You deserve a break. And who knows… maybe you’ll come back from your break more refreshed than ever ready to kill the second half of your day!
Find A Mentor or Someone You Can Go To
When I was in training for my new job I heard our presenter say several things about their mentor. This presenter made it seem like this mentor in their life really helped shape their work career. I couldn’t help but think how?? Like how did you find this mentor, how did they help you move up, how do I find this person for me? Well it wasn’t too long after starting my job that I started working with someone of the executives at my job. They got word that I was good at a certain thing so they came to me for help. Not long after that we were working hand and hand on this party that was a huge success. From there, I got experience working with someone who I knew had great judgment and executions skills so I wanted her to be my mentor.
I waited a couple months to ask her because I wanted to be sure (and honestly I was soooooo scared to ask). One day I mustered up the courage and asked her for a meeting- the rest was history! Very soon after talking with her she helped me move up into my current role. The path I am taking at my job isn’t a normal one, but my mentor knew this would be my path.
The End
Thanks for coming to my TED talk š until next time my friends.
xoxo, Cass
