Sorority Recruitment!?! Only my favorite time of the year. It comes with a lot of stress and a lot of late nights but I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I always knew I wanted to be in a sorority. I can’t exactly remember when my love for sororities came around, maybe after watching Legally Blonde on repeat LOL. But anyways since I could remember I always wanted to be apart of something bigger.
When looking for a college, the first thing I would look for was my major, then it was straight to seeing what their sororities looked like! Even though I rushed in fall 2014 social media wasn’t anywhere as it is today. But none the less I still stocked all the chapter’s Instagrams and Facebooks. I loved seeing all the fun the girls were having and I was trying to see who I could fit in with.
The summer before my freshman year of college was spent watching YouTube videos on what to wear during sorority recruitment. Then I would spend hours online reading every article I could find about recruitment and sorority related topics. I was just so excited to find my new forever home.
Here at the University of Houston our recruitment is a mutual selection process. Long story short, that means the sorority has to pick you and you have to pick them! When I went through recruitment, after each round I would go into a computer room and chose my top choices. The sororities would do the same. Then I would go to recruitment the next day to see what houses I was going back to that day. It was literally the most anxiety filled best weekend of my life LOL.
When it came down to preference round I got my top two houses YAY! I honestly was torn and had no idea what to do so I was hoping the two different preference ceremonies would help me decide… NOPE! I left my last house crying because I had no idea what to do. I had to sit myself down and ask where do I see myself growing? Where do I see myself fitting in? Where do I see myself finding my best friends? Then the answer was clear to me what sorority I needed to chose!
Going through recruitment as a PNM will be the best and the worst time of your life. You will go through so many emotions and that’s okay! Let yourself feel them all. If you want to cry, just cry! It’s okay to not know what to do or where to go! But, my advice to you is do your research! Check all the sororities out beforehand and talk to the girls if you can! Also, don’t just cross one house off your list because someone else says they are bad. Make decisions for yourself and don’t let anyone else persuade you! This is going to be your home for the next four years and life. You are going to go through ups and downs in your sorority. But, at the end of the day the girls are going to be your sisters and that is a bond no one can take away! The girls you chose to join and be sisters with will end up being your best friends, your bridesmaids, your “moms”, your confidants, your roommates and so much more.
I wish everyone luck that is going through recruitment this coming fall! As cliché as it sounds BE YOURSELF. Dress yourself in clothes that are your style, talk about things you actually want to talk about you and be the person you want to be. Don’t pretend to be something you’re not! You will all find exactly where you need to go, I promise! Trust the process, be outgoing and ask a ton of questions! You got this girl!
